If you’re experiencing connection issues while playing on console, follow the steps below to resolve common network problems. Console platforms have system-level network controls that limit how much we can troubleshoot directly, so this guide focuses on the most effective basic checks.
Before You Start
Ensure that:
- Your console is connected to the internet
- Other online services (games, streaming apps) are working
- There are no known platform service outages
Restart Your Console and Network
- Fully power off your modem/or router
- Wait 60 seconds before powering it back on
- Turn on your console and try connecting again
Check Your Network Connection
PlayStation
- Settings > Network > Settings > Test Internet Connection
Xbox
- Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection
If the test fails, note which step fails (Internet, PSN/Xbox Live, NAT)
Use a Wired Connection (If Possible)
Connect your console directly to the router using an Ethernet cable. This helps rule out Wi-Fi interference or signal issues.
Verify NAT Type
Restricted NAT types can cause matchmaking and connection issues.
Aim for NAT Type 1 or 2 (PlayStation) or Open NAT (Xbox). If your NAT is Moderate/Strict, contact your ISP for further assistance on how modify your router settings.
Xbox also has a handy article on troubleshooting NAT errors here.
Update Your Console System Software
Ensure that your game and console is fully updated to the latest version. Once updates are complete, restart your console!
